You may be familiar with Mylar in shiny helium-filled balloons, solar filters, space blankets, protective plastic coatings or insulators. Mylar is a product made by DuPont. It has become sort of "generic" in the balloon and balloon bouquet trade. Mylar balloons are actually made of BoPET or biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate. Two other well known trade names for BoPET are Melinex and Hostaphan. The balloon bouquets we deliver in the Portland area are made of BoPET or biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate by several manufactures. Although we often refer to our Foil Balloon Bouquets as Mylar Balloon Bouquets technically they are not Foil or Mylar. People often refer to these balloons as Metalic Balloons but they actually have no metal in them.
We will most likely continue to refer to these balloons as mylar balloons and continue to sell mylar balloon bouquets much like people ask for a Kleenex but will actually settle for any facial tissue.
